A trio of officers were killed and no fewer than 15 additional individuals got wounded in what appears to be premeditated gas explosion at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The detonation took place as police and firefighters entered the house close to the Verona region to enforce an eviction order for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals got detained at the location and another man who fled following the incident was found shortly later. Each of them have been admitted to hospital.

The explosion could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the location revealed the building turned into a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who added that efforts had been made to remove the three family members in the past.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto region, President Zaia, stated the property was facing an eviction order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to talk with the siblings who had secured themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think a family member caused the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Claudio Papagno informed the media.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the explosion directly hit our members,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also located at the residence, the minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the explosion consisted of 11 other members of the police force as well as three officers of national police and a firefighter.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had was without power.

He believed the explosion had taken place on a level above the doorway and told reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the blast, he said members had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas cylinders being activated”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents stated to reporters, mentioning that the three had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto united with other political leaders in honoring the three officers who had been killed in the service of their country.
