Doris Makes Irish Selection While Joe McCarthy Misses Out

Rugby team announcement update

Newly reappointed manager the Ireland coach has named captain Doris in his Ireland squad for the autumn Tests, but Joe McCarthy is absent.

Doris, who has not played since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, recently returned to Leinster training, with doubts lingering whether he will be ready to play against New Zealand in the US on November 1.

Lock McCarthy, however, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot injury he sustained during the opening Lions match against the Wallabies in July.

Ulster forward Izuchukwu and Munster winger Nash also miss out because of fitness concerns, while number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing a hip operation following the summer tour.

Dublin province prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new member in the 34-player group, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped provincial duo Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped Connacht winger Bolton will head to Chicago as "backup".

After playing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their 2016 meeting, the team host the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"There's an exciting look to the squad and there's an opportunity for the more experienced members and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to the Lelos and Portugal," said Farrell, back to national team duties after a break to coach the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.

In a mostly familiar-looking selection, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will once again compete for the starting number 10 spot. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, as the two players poised to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming URC game at Croke Park.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional number 10 chosen with the coach deciding not to calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, the Ireland boss has selected Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer international wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a return for the western province's Caolin Blade, chosen to club-mate Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran group of centre options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the centres, though the youngster is also a frontrunner to deputise for the full-back at full-back.

Wingers James Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. O'Brien impressed on his national team debut during the summer with a brace each in the wins over the Lelos and the Lobos.

McCarthy is the sole new addition in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has started two of Leinster's three United Rugby Championship games so far and featured in the second string's loss by the English in Bristol previously.

The 22-year-old was selected in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a international appearance.

Munster lock Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is retained, and veteran Northern province second row Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.

Conan, who played in all three Lions matches during the tour, is set to cover for the captain should the skipper fails to recover fitness soon enough to play the All Blacks.

The national team will assemble in Dublin on Monday before traveling to Chicago on the following day.
